Printer care and maintenance.

The printer translates your concept from intangible electronic format to a tangible, physical creation on a printing media. Needless to say that a printer must be kept in tiptop shape at all times to translate a concept into an admirable, often sellable, physical creation. And, a laser as well as an ink jet printer has different care and maintenance that printer owners must know about to prolong the life and maintain their printer’s efficiency.

Ink jet printers, although relatively cheaper than laser printers, require the most care and maintenance during its useful years. An ink jet printer owner must mind about the cartridge and the moving parts of an ink jet printer because they could fail from dust or dried ink accumulated over time. It’s ideal for ink jet printers to be thoroughly cleaned every six months by blowing compressed air and using ink solvents to take out the accumulated printer gunk.

Here are some immediate care and maintenance you can do to your ink jet printer if you see signs of inefficiency such as the following:

1. Faint print quality – is a sign of nozzle problem. If you experience faint color or color failures, run the nozzle pattern utility to correct the problem.

2. Blot ink or white spaces – is a sign of clogged print head, which can be remedied by running the cleaning utility function of your printer. Test the print results and perform the utility function several times if necessary. Using OEM ink is also recommended to avoid clogging.

3. Out of sync colors and banding lines – are a sign that print head alignment is necessary. Run the print head alignment in your printer’s utility menu to take care of this problem.

Laser printers on the other hand demands lesser care and maintenance compared to any other types of printers. Cleaning a laser printer involves occasionally wiping a damp cloth over the rollers and vacuuming the accumulated toner dust particles inside. Once your laser printer logs approximately 100,000 pages, it’s advised that you replace its fuser, the part that melts the toner on to the printing media.

Printers are expensive investment; therefore, proper care and maintenance is necessary to prolong the useful life of these investments. Not to mention that minor printer breakdown due to misuse and poor maintenance can cause you headache or even lost revenue for your business.
